To print from a university computer or university laptop while in the library or on campus, the print option in the document you are working on should default to the appropriate print queue. To retrieve your printing, go to any printer in the library or on campus and log in, using either your student card or manually using your MWS login and password. You will then be able to release your documents to be printed at that printer.

For more information see IT Services' Follow You Printing.

Please note: all printers on campus are designed to use standard photocopy and printing paper which is usually between 80 and 100 grams in weight. Anything heavier than 100 grams can cause damage to the machine. If you need to print on heavy card, you will need to contact a commercial printing service .

Can I print from my own mobile device or laptop?

Students and staff members of University of Liverpool  are able to print from personal laptops, tablets or mobile devices via either the web browser Print Anywhere or by email. For more information and instructions see IT Services' Print Anywhere.

How do I print in colour?

To print in colour, please ensure you select colour in Printer Properties before you print your document and ensure you are printing from a colour printer.

Below is an example of how to change the settings to colour when printing a Word document.

As well as printing, the Multi-Functional Devices (MFDs) in the library and on campus can photocopy and scan.  For guidance on how to photocopy or scan see these basic instructions (also available by the machines in the Library). If you need further assistance please contact a member of staff in either the Library or at the IT Service Help Desks.

How much can I photocopy and scan?

For information on how much you can copy please see our Copyright Guide. Information will also be displayed at every MFD.

To print and photocopy you will need to add credit to your print account, where you can also check your balance. Your print account can also be accessed from any university PC/laptop  desktop; from the Tools and Services section of the student intranet and via the IT Services website

The cost for printing/photocopying varies depending on the size of the page you want to print (e.g. A3, A4, etc.), if it is one-sided or two, and whether you wish to print in black and white or colour. For more information see IT Services' print and photocopying costs.

How do staff and Research Postgraduates pay for printing?

Staff members or Research Postgraduates do not have to pay upfront for photocopying or printing, this includes specialised printing such as posters. (Charges are incurred by your School or Department who will arrange any recharges if necessary).

Please Note: that this does not apply to all schools and departments and you should check with your school/department Admin for their printing policy.

Do I have to pay for scanning?

There is no charge for scanning but customers must still have some money in their print account to use the service. The minimum amount required is 5p.

Can I get a receipt for printing?

To print off a receipt for work you have printed out, log into the Student Intranet and scroll down to More Tools and Online Services. Click on My Printing and then User Dashboard and then Reports. Under View Selected Reports you will be able to view and print a listing of your jobs. You can also click on the My Printing desktop shortcut on any Teaching Centre PC and log in with your user name and password. Then click on User Dashboard > Reports > View Selected report

For further assistance please contact the IT Services Department.

If  your student card is not recognised on the printers/MFD, which may be the case if you a have a new card, you will need to register it on an MFD.

To register your card on an MFD you will first need to log in manually. To do this tap on the screen of the printer. This will bring up 'User ID' and 'Password' buttons, press theses buttons and a keyboard will appear, enter your MWS username and password and then select 'Login' on screen. After you have logged in, log back out and scan your card using the smartcard reader (to the right hand side of the MFD).

You can also log in manually if you need to print and do not have your student card.

To test if your card is registered, log out and scan your card again.

For any further problems please ask a member of staff.

If there is an issue with your printing you will need to contact the IT Services to report the problem and request a refund.

Print credit cannot be refunded but can be transferred to another account. For more information please see our Library FAQ: I am finishing University and still have print credit, can I get a refund?

Most of the Multi Functional Devices on each Campus are able to staple documents . You need to request the stapling facility in the Print Dialogue box at the same time as you send the instruction to print a document:

  • Select Printer properties
  • Find the Staple Drop down menu
  • Choose how many staples, e.g Top left2 at left.

Staplers, hole punches, guillotines and various other items of stationery are also available in the Harold Cohen and Sydney Jones libraries and are located near the Help Desks. At the Leahurst library, please speak to a member of staff if you need to borrow a stapler, hole punch etc.

Printing

Registered visitors, alumni and Sconul members can print from the Library's electronic resources via our walk-in access facility (subject to copyright conditions) for non-commercial use only ie. for private study or research.

Printing and scanning for any other use (Internet web pages, personal e-mails, other documents) is only available for students and staff members as this requires a username and password. Visitors should access the public library service if they require access to printing or scanning facilities for these purposes.

Photocopying

Visitors can photocopy in the library, subject to copyright conditions, by purchasing a guest card and adding credits. If you would like to photocopy in the Library please speak to a member of staff at the Help Desk and we will assist you subject to copyright regulations.

Scanning

Visitors are not permitted to use the Library scanning facilities as this service requires the customer to have a University computer account. Scanning is therefore only available for University of Liverpool staff and students.
