If you are having trouble getting the barcode read by the self service machine when borrowing a book, it could be because the barcode is positioned in a place that is difficult for the self service machine scanner to read it. This is usually the case with large text books.

You still need to position the book fully in the 'V' of the reader, but then fold the page with the barcode on slightly, so that the red scan line can easily read the barcode. Sometimes the edge of the scan line is not able to read the barcode correctly. Please ask a member of staff if you would like a demonstration of how to do this. 

This should do the trick but if there is still a problem with taking the book out then speak to a member of staff at the Help Desk as there could be another reason why you are unable to issue the item.
