How many times a book can be renewed depends both on the loan period of the item you are renewing, and on your membership:

Undergraduates are allowed 15 renewals on standard and 7 day loan items and 6 renewals on 3 day loan items.

Staff, Research Postgraduates and Taught Postgraduates have unlimited renewals.

Alumni are allowed 12 renewals on 14 day, 15 renewals on 7 day loan items and 6 renewals on 3 day loan items. External members are allowed 12 renewals.

Short loan items (including DVDs) cannot be renewed by any category of member.

Limits on the number of times you can renew exist to enable fair access to all Library customers. The Library cannot provide unlimited copies for everyone, so we seek to ensure that books are not out of circulation for excessive periods, particularly core textbooks and other items in high demand. The maximum number of renewals has increased over recent years and for standard loan items the renewals allowed for undergraduates enables books to be kept for the full academic year, as long as they are not recalled. Note that renewals cannot be made if a reservation or hold has been placed on a particular book.

Electronic resources allow year round access and the library encourages customers to choose ebook options as much as possible.

Renewals can be made via My Library Account. If you reach the maximum renewals you should return your books to the Library. If no one has reserved them, you will be able to borrow them again and start from zero renewals. If you are unable to visit the library, or need further information, get in touch using one of the Contact Us options.

Before leaving the University for vacation or any other extended period, please check the number of renewals still available for any items that are not issued for the full vacation period. Where necessary, return the books and re-issue them, to start again from zero renewals. Be aware that any items not issued for the vacation period can be reserved by other users and you would then not be able to renew them.
