If the library does not have access to the material you require, please submit a request via the Get It For Me service, a one stop shop for all your resource needs, and we will either purchase or borrow the item from another library via our interlibrary loan service.

The service is available to all members of staff and students of the University of Liverpool as well as members of our alumni community.

Members of staff and students of the University of Liverpool can submit requests via the Get It For Me service using their Managed Windows Service (MWS) username and password to log in.

Alumni are entitled to use the Get it for Me service, and should contact us to set up an account. Once you have an account, use the separate Get It For Me Alumni login.

Before submitting your request, please check the Library Catalogue, to see whether the Library has available copies in its collection.

When filling the form, please give as much detail as possible to help us identify the resource successfully and quickly, otherwise your request may be delayed.

The following information is required when submitting a request:

  • For books:
Author’s full name, full title, publisher, date of publication and ISBN. It is useful to include the source of reference, i.e. details of the book, bibliography or journal article from where you took the information about your request.
  • For journal articles:
Title of journal, the relevant year, volume number, issue number if known, pages and also the author and title of the article.

Additional Information for Theses

Most UK doctoral theses are available to download through the Electronic Theses Online Service EThOS. Generally, Get It For Me requests should only be submitted for non-doctoral theses e.g. Masters theses. EThOS offers free access to full text UK doctoral theses.  Occasionally, it may not be possible for EThOS to digitise a thesis, in which case contact the Inter- Library Loan team (interlib@liverpool.ac.uk or 0151 794 5414) and we will advise as to whether we can borrow the original copy from the awarding university. Please note that you will be required to consult the material in the Library only.

The Library subscribes to the full-text version of ProQuest Dissertations & Theses  which allows full-text access to over 600,000 of the 2 million theses listed, which were mostly awarded by American Universities. However, if you cannot locate the thesis you need in the database, please contact us at interlib@liverpool.ac.uk or 0151 794 5414 in advance of submitting a request. This will allow us to establish whether we can source access to the material on your behalf.

If the material you request is received on Inter-Library Loan

  • Books
You will receive an email asking you to collect your item for loan from the Help Desk in the Library. Items will be issued to you by a member of staff. It is not possible to self-issue inter-library loans. The bookmark that accompanies the loan contains important information and should be kept with the item whilst in your care. Books can normally be borrowed for 5 weeks but this can vary as the lending library will determine the length of the loan period. Items borrowed via Inter-library Loan are subject to recall at any time by the lender. Patrons are notified of recalls via a courtesy email, but are ultimately responsible for keeping track of the due dates and statuses of their books. Additionally, items not returned by their due dates may also be billed for replacement by the lender and the full cost passed on to our patrons.
  • Journal articles
You will either be sent a photocopy to keep or a Secure Electronic Delivery document (please see the section below) will be sent via email with a link to the article.
  • Theses
If an original copy is supplied, you will have to consult it in the Library.
  • Library use only
A few items can only be used for reference in the Library. If the material you request is only available as a reference item we will confirm with you first that this is suitable to your needs.

Renewing your Inter-Library Loan

Inter-Library Loan items do not appear in ‘My Library Account’. Renewals can be requested by contacting the Inter-Library Loan team, interlib@liverpool.ac.uk, Tel: 0151 794 5414. Inter-library Loan books are not renewed automatically. Please note that renewals are not guaranteed and are up to the lender's discretion.

Returning Your Inter-Library Loan

These should be returned to the Help Desk in the Harold Cohen Library or the Sydney Jones Library. You cannot return them via the self-service points.

The British Library can deliver journal articles and book chapters to you electronically. They use an electronic delivery method that allows them to supply secure, encrypted documents and ensure that the item is used only as permitted. We can only provide this service if the British Library is the supplier, otherwise we will supply a copy in the format specified by the supplying library.

The document is locked to a user rather than a machine, meaning it can be viewed on any computer or mobile device. Users are required to register once with the British Library to enable them to open documents.

The email you receive with the link from the British Library will prompt you to register, or login if you have already registered. There may be a short delay between registering and accessing your article. For future logins, access will be immediate. You will need to have Adobe Reader 10 or above installed on your device.

The document is available to download for 30 days after which the file is deleted. You can print a single paper copy only, from which you cannot make further copies.

If you are using Google Chrome you will need to disable the built-in PDF viewer in order to read your document. To do this:

  1. Open the Google Chrome browser on your PC.
  2. Now click on the Three Dots at the top right corner and from there select Settings.
  3. Then scroll down and click on Advanced Settings.
  4.  In the Privacy & Security section click on Site Settings.
  5. Select PDF Documents.
  6. Now to Disable the Chrome PDF Viewer turn on Download PDF files instead of automatically opening them in Chrome’.

Alternatively, you could use a different browser such as Internet Explorer or Firefox.

The encryption technology is not certified for use on Apple mobile devices using Google Chrome. The British Library recommends that you use the default browser (Safari) to download your document. Other browsers may work, however you need to disable the default PDF viewer as the document will only be visible in Adobe Reader. Alternatively save the document, then right click and choose to open in Adobe Reader.

We welcome requests and enquiries from other libraries in the UK and abroad.

  • We are participants in the IFLA vouchers scheme and welcome requests from any Library worldwide that participates in the scheme. Please send three vouchers for a loan and one and a half vouchers for a photocopy.

British Library Document Supply Centre

Most items for inter-library loans are supplied by the British Library Document Supply Centre (BLDSC) based at Boston Spa in Yorkshire. We rely heavily on this service to obtain monographs and journal articles and occasionally use the BLDSC's "World Wide Search service" to obtain monographs and reports published overseas.

You can search the British Library Catalogue but please note that the British Library in London is a reference Library and their stock is usually not available for inter-library loan. If you are unable to trace the item you require you should still apply for an Inter-Library loan as it may be available from another Library.

OCLC: SHARES

SHARES gives us access to the collections of a large number of research and university libraries in North America and in several other countries. We apply to SHARES libraries through OCLC WorldShare ILL and we use it primarily to obtain material not available in the UK.

Theses

UK PhD theses are usually available to download free of charge from EThOS. If the item required is not a PhD level thesis or is not available via EThOS you may contact Inter-Library Loans, tel. 0151 794 5414 or e-mail at interlib@liverpool.ac.uk.
