To request changes please contact the Librarian for Online Programmes (PC 25/06/18).

If you are studying an online programme you should use the Library for Online Programmes as your primary method for obtaining E-Resources. Note – you do not require physical borrowing at the campus Libraries to access electronic Library E-Resources, you should use your UoL (MWS) login to access E-Resources.

For incidental visits to the University Libraries in Liverpool you can register for a day pass on each separate visit, obtained at the reception desk as you enter either of the University Libraries, this will allow access to the buildings and use of many local services and use of physical resources for reference (but not loaning).

For longer-term access e.g. visiting over several weeks without requirement for loaning, a public visitor card can be created allowing entry via Library electronic access points, this will require completing a form and submitting a photo and related information at a Library desk.

If you are studying an online programme and wish to loan physical items in the physical University of Liverpool Libraries you will need to register for one of our categories of Library borrowing membership; this requires completing a registration form and consenting to have your photograph taken for registration purposes in the library.

Note - you must have a current UK residential address to register for any category of physical Library membership/borrowing.

Note - students with our partner Laureate Education can apply via one of our external borrowing schemes or via our external borrowers route (unless an alternative scheme option is used).

Please also see this guideline for online students on categories of membership for Accessing/ using the physical Libraries.

Other (non-UoL) Libraries

If you are studying an online programme and wish to use another (external/non UoL) University library then you should investigate the options available for access/ borrowing on their external Web pages.

You should note that use of the SCONUL access scheme for using other UK University Libraries is limited to current borrowing members of the University of Liverpool Library, if you are not a full borrowing member of the University of Liverpool Library we are unable to provide a SCONUL card.

You may also wish to explore accessing public or National Libraries. You can access online catalogues to view the contents of these Libraries or you may wish to explore use of Inter-Library Loan or item delivery/ request services available in these Libraries (see guideline below).

You may also wish to email/ write to an external Library to explore access options including your full name, University ID number, programme of study, contact details for an academic tutor or other staff member and an explanation of why you would like to use their Library.

Please see the following guideline on Using other Libraries.

You may find the WorldCat platform useful to search for print items held in worldwide Libraries/ local libraries, this platform can be useful to locate a print item held locally to you or for arranging an inter-library loan (to loan an item via your own local library sourced from another regional library). You can access WorldCat from the left menu of the Library for Online Programmes or visit

We provide a dedicated E-Learning Librarian to assist you in using Library resources. If you have any problems using the Library or technical problems, please see the Contacts area of the Library for Online Programmes. Also see our guides, videos, tutorials and Library Training Module available via the Library for Online Programmes.
