There are postgraduate study areas in both the Harold Cohen and the Sydney Jones Libraries.

In the Harold Cohen Library the postgraduate study room is located on the upper ground floor.

There is one postgraduate room for research postgraduates. For more details on the room, please see 'Researcher Reading Room' below.

There is also another postgraduate room for taught postgraduates on the second floor of the Abercromby Wing.

The Researcher Reading Room in the Sydney Jones Library is for use by Research Staff and Research Postgraduates (PhD and MRes students).

Access is by University ID card, which is automatically activated once you start your research degree. However, postgraduate researchers who started their studies prior to November 2022 will need to complete an access form at the SJL Helpdesk. Access to the Researcher Reading Room should then be granted within 48 hours.

The Researcher Reading Room resources include:

  • Study space for at least 60 people.
  • 21 PCs. The desks are fixed height but the chairs are fully adjustable. Each desk with a PC has an adjustable chair and light.
  • 6 dual-monitor pcs.
  • 24 seats and desk space for laptop users. Each space has 2 network points and 2 mains sockets, and a light.
  • 12 seats at reading tables.
  • 3 tables with informal seating.
  • A height-adjustable accessible desk, with a dual-monitor pc and an accessibility chair.
  • A comfortable social space.
  • A water fountain.
  • Recycling bins.
  • 36 lockers for daily or longer term use.
  • Opening hours are the same as the Library opening hours..

There are 36 lockers available for daily or longer term use. To request a locker in the Researcher Reading Room, speak to a member of staff, who will issue a key to your library record. Daily use will not require a deposit but short loan fines will be incurred for late return of the key. Long term locker use requires a returnable deposit of £15. Please be aware that there may be a waiting list for long term lockers.
