Infringement of Copyright occurs when a substantial part of the whole of a protected work is used without the permission of the copyright owner and without the use of one of the exceptions allowed by law.

For more information on the exceptions allowed by law see the section on Information for teaching staff.

If there are any doubts about whether you can copy or not it is advisable to seek advice either from your Liaison Librarian or by emailing

If any person becomes aware that any defamatory, inaccurate or copyright infringing material is included within VITAL or any other reason why it would be expedient for the University to remove the materials whilst an investigation is undertaken by the Head of Department, they must contact the University Computing Services Department immediately.
