What is happening?

From Monday 3 June to Sunday 15 September (inclusive) the Grove Wing of the Sydney Jones Library is shut to allow major work to be carried out in the first phase of the redesign, replacement and expansion of the Sydney Jones Library toilet facilities.

Can I still study in the Sydney Jones Library whilst the building works take place?

Yes! Only the Grove Wing will be closed. You will be able to access and study in all parts of the the Abercromby Wing however, once the works start, study space may become limited and you should expect significant noise levels and reduced access to facilities. As works progress, other toilets in the Library will closed off, but there will always be toilet facilities. Don't forget that the Sydney Jones Library is operating summer opening hours during this period and is open 9am - 6pm daily.

I need a copy of a specific book, how do I get it?

During this period of building work, you will not be able to get direct shelf access to the majority of the Sydney Jones physical book collections, which are shelved in the Grove Wing, but don't worry - we will operate a Click and Collect service Monday to Friday to provide access to physical materials, and our services and extensive collections will remain available online via the library website and Library Search. The Harold Cohen Library will also stay open throughout summer.

What other spaces are there on campus that I can use to study?

Please see our separate FAQ for other study spaces available  on campus.

Is the Library Garden still open?

Yes! The Brett Gardens will remain open from 10am – 6pm as an outdoor study space, however temporary closure periods may be necessary to facility building work.

Can I still access Special Collections and Archives?

Unfortunately, you won't be able to physically visit Special Collection & Archives, however the team are still available and happy to help with any enquiries via phone (01517942696) and email.

What are the Sydney Jones Library opening hours over summer?

The Sydney Jones Library is open 9am - 6pm throughout the summer. The Harold Cohen Library is still currently open 24 hours until 12 July, with a help desk service running 9am-6pm. Check our opening hours for full details.

What about postgraduate students?

The postgraduate researcher reading room will be closed during the Grove Wing closure. Postgraduate students are advised to use the taught postgraduate study room on the second floor of the Abercromby Wing, though you can also use the postgraduate study room in the Harold Cohen Library. You can also utilise all of our other Library services including click & collect, poster printing and our online services.

I need to return books, where should I go?

Returning books and other items is unaffected. You can bring them to the Sydney Jones or the Harold Cohen Libraries as you usually would.

What help desk services are the Sydney Jones Library offering over summer?

Both help desks are open as normal and all services are available at both libraries. Our team are available to help Monday to Friday, 9am - 5pm.

Can I still pick posters up from the Sydney Jones Library?

Yes, you can still collect printed posters from the Sydney Jones Library reception. Find out more information about poster printing
