- Core textbooks or some books on Reading Lists at Liverpool are reference/use in library to allow everyone on a particular course or module has access to at least one copy of that text whilst in the library.
- Items/resources where we only have one copy, or because of the nature of their content eg. law reports, current affairs publications etc.
- Items which cannot be read from cover to cover in the conventional way eg. encyclopaedias, concordances, yearbooks, dictionaries, thesauri and some types of atlases.
- Books which are particularly rare or have aged greatly. In order to preserve the life of a volume, it is placed on the library circulation system as “Reference Only” (as an example, items in Special Collections and Archives are classed as Reference /Library Use).
