There are 3 study zones within the library, denoting the permitted noise levels: group study, quiet study and silent study.

  • Normal volume talking
  • Mobile phones permitted in areas designated as group study
  • In the Harold Cohen Library, this applies to:
    • Foyer
    • Lower Ground Floor
    • Upper Ground Floor study tables
    • Ground Floor Refreshments and Group Study Room
    • Ground Floor Computer Rooms PC1 and PC2
    • Second Floor Computer Rooms PC5 and PC8
    • Third Floor
    • Fourth Floor
  • In the Sydney Jones Library, this applies to:
    • Entrance
    • Basement Group Study Rooom, Abercromby Wing
    • Ground Floor of Abercromby Wing
    • Second Floor Abercromby Wing
    • Links on the Ground floor
  • Keep conversation levels low and to an absolute minimum
  • Turn off mobile phone alerts
  • Do not use this area for group study or discussion
  • Do not conduct phone conversations
  • Use laptops with consideration (use headphones and sound must be inaudible to those nearby)
  • In the Harold Cohen Library, this applies to:
    • Upper Ground Floor Postgraduate Room
    • First Floor Quiet Study Room
    • Second Floor Computer Rooms PC6 and PC7
  • In the Sydney Jones Library, this applies to:
    • First Floor Abercromby Wing
    • Ground Floor Grove Wing
    • First Floor Grove Wing
    • First and Second Floor link
    • Mobile phone use is however permitted in the stairwells
  • Work silently at all times including when using laptops and computers
  • Refrain from rustling food wrappers and eating noisy food
  • Turn off mobile phone alerts
  • Ensure any personal listening equipment is inaudible to those nearby
  • In the Harold Cohen Library, this applies to:
    • Silent Study Rooms
    • First Floor Computer Rooms PC3 and PC4
  • In the Sydney Jones Library, this applies to:
    • Second Floor Grove Wing
    • mobile phone use is however permitted in the stairwells

Contact our Roving Library Assistants/Rovers, by text or email, Monday-Friday during term time 9:00am-9:00pm and weekends 8am until 1pm.

Tell us your study location and we'll send someone along.

During the summer vacation, and at the Leahurst library, please inform a member of staff at the Help Desk or reception if noise is a problem.
