We provide opportunities for local school and college students to visit and experience what an Academic Library has to offer.

  1.  A tour of the library, either:
    • Sydney Jones Library for Arts, Humanities & Social Sciences, or
    • Harold Cohen Library for Science, Medicine & Engineering
  2.  Access to the building without a Library tour.
  3. A hands-on workshop for ‘A’ Level students on how to find information for Extended Project Qualifications (EPQs).
  4. Special Collections and Archives overview, which can include highlights of the current exhibition and/or the opportunity to view a selection of materials relevant to specific subject areas (subject to staff time and availability).
  5. The Victoria Gallery & Museum and the Garstang Museum of Archaeology, offer a range of opportunities for schools to engage with their wonderful collections and exhibitions. We offer a series of engaging sessions linked to the National Curriculum, led by our team of experienced facilitators and artists.

The maximum number of students we can take at one visit is 25 (this may be fewer, depending on the activity requested).

Visits are available on weekdays, excluding Wednesday afternoons, during:

  • mid-November – mid-December
  • February – March
  • June – July

These timings allow us accommodate the needs of university students during the academic year, e.g. prioritising library access for them during assessment periods.

If you are a teacher who would like to arrange a visit for your students, please complete the booking form and provide us with as much detail as possible.  We may not always be able to accommodate the dates/numbers that you require, so please contact us well in advance.  We will respond within 3 working days.

School and college students can register to use the Library for reference purposes: please see the membership options page. Reference members can access some of our electronic resources, including eBooks and journals through our on-site library walk-in access PC. Please ask at the Help Desk.
