Standards are codes of best practice containing technical specifications and guidelines.
University of Liverpool students and staff have access to the full-text of British Standards via British Standards Online.
For further information click on the Standards and Patents tabs in the Engineering, Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Library Guides or contact the Liaison Librarian.
Visitors and others without a Managed Windows Service login can access British Standards via the Library's walk-in access facility.
Please note: BSI have introduced additional security for the downloading of PDFs from the BSOL platform.
To download PDFs from the BSOL site users should install FileOpen on their device. Further information and guidance is available from British Standards Institute.
If you are using an MWS device, the FileOpen Plugin for Acrobat is available from Install University Applications (on the MWS Desktop) and can be quickly installed in a few simple clicks.
You can find British Standards Online via our A-Z databases webpage on the Library Home Page.
Once in A-Z Databases type 'British Standards Online' in the search box at the top right and click 'Go:'
Off campus you will be prompted to log in with your MWS username and password. This is the username and password you use to log into the University computers.

Often an ISO International Standard will have a direct British Standard equivalent and will therefore be accessible via the British Standards Online website.
If it cannot be found via this route, a copy can be requested through Get It For Me.
The University of Liverpool Library subscribes to ASTM Compass, giving university staff and students full-text access to standards, books and papers from the American Society for Testing and Materials. For more information see our ASTM Standards and Engineering Digital Library blogpost.
Search by International Electronical Commission as an author on Library Search to see if we have online access to the IEC standard you want.
If the IEC standard has a direct BS equivalent (e.g. IEC 60853. Part 3), you can search for it by its number on British Standards Online and download the PDF. If you do not find your standard on the catalogue or British Standards Online, search for the details on the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) webstore and request it via Get It For Me..
University of Liverpool students and staff have access to the full text of IEEE Standards via IEEE Xplore.
We may be able to source a copy of this from another library. Use Get It For Me to make your request, giving as much detail as possible.
If there are any technical issues affecting access to ASTM, British Standards Online or IEEE Xplore on the A-Z Databases webpage, access can be obtained via the list of links on our Library FAQ How can I access Library online resources if there are technical issues?
